Climate change affects groups of people disproportionately. According to WHO, "despite contributing minimally to global emissions, low-income countries and small island developing states (SIDS) endure the harshest health impacts. [...] Furthermore, climate change is undermining many of the social determinants for good health, such as livelihoods, equality and access to health care and social support structures. These climate-sensitive health risks are disproportionately felt by the most vulnerable and disadvantaged, including women, children, ethnic minorities, poor communities, migrants or displaced persons, older populations, and those with underlying health conditions." In wealthy countries, the impacts of climate change are also felt most by marginalized groups.
However, everyone is affected by climate change, and no one is untouched by its effects. To learn more, go here: https://www.noaa.gov/education/resource-collections/climate/climate-change-impacts.
What is Climate Justice?
The climate justice movement focuses on how climate change impacts different groups of people disproportionately and how we can help everyone, no matter their race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, etc., find a better future, even in the face of climate change. There are six pillars of climate justice according to UC Center for Climate Justice: just transition; social, racial, and environmental justice; indigenous climate action; community resilience and adaptation; natural climate solutions; and climate education and engagement.
